In a remarkable start for India at the ISSF Shotgun World Championships 2025, Zoravar Singh Sandhu secured the bronze medal in the men's trap event, marking the nation’s first medal of the championship held in Athens.

A Stellar Qualification Round

Earlier in the day, Zoravar showcased his shooting prowess by qualifying with an impressive score of 122 (24, 25, 25, 25, 23) across five rounds, missing only one target in the initial four rounds.

Historic Achievement

At the age of 48, Zoravar Singh Sandhu has made a significant mark in the world of shooting, returning to the championships more than three decades after competing in his first Junior World Championship and 27 years since his debut at the Senior Worlds.

Performance Under Pressure

Competing at the Malakasa Shooting Range amidst steady rain, Zoravar hit 31 out of his first 40 targets in the 50-shot final, ultimately securing third place. The competition was fierce, with former Olympic champion Josip Glasnovic from Croatia taking home the gold medal with 44 hits, and Spain’s Andres Garcia, the Junior World Champion, claiming silver with 39 hits.

Reflections on the Experience

After the final, a composed Zoravar expressed his gratitude, stating, “It was a great experience. The range and conditions were tough, but that’s how it is. I’m thankful to my family, coaches, and teammates for their support.”

Women’s Trap Final Results

In the women’s trap final, Spain’s Mar Molne Magrina clinched the gold medal with an impressive 46 hits, while Italy’s Silvana Maria Stanco took silver, once again falling short after her near miss at the Paris Olympics. Poland’s Sandra Bernal rounded out the podium with a bronze medal.

Looking Ahead

The championship is set to conclude on Saturday with the Trap Mixed Team event, where India’s two pairs will aim to add to the nation’s medal tally.
